The departure of in-form striker- Michael Olunga shocked all JLeague football followers, when it was announced at the beginning of 2021. Literally, a month after receiving the J1 League MVP award. Olunga left the 'land of the rising sun' shortly after his former club's loss to FC Tokyo in the Levain cup final. Kashiwa Reysol went into that game as sure favorites but unfortunately the football 'Gods' had other plans.
Following that defeat, it was later announced that the Kenyan international would be transferring to play in Qatar, for Al Duhail SC in the Stars League. The disclosed amount was a 'whopping' 7million euros transfer fee. The 27 year old made the right career decision in accepting that offer. Young footballers are beginning to smarten up and are 'cashing in' on their talent while they can. This move was the perfect way for him to secure his financial future. Olunga has the awareness and presence of mind to know that pro sports is a short career and opportunities to get this kind of money don't come around very often. Middle-Eastern clubs are known for being 'big spenders' when it comes to acquiring top talent.
Olunga's performances in the J1League, will forever remain in the memory of the fans. He truly is an exceptional talent. His game was colossal in every way! His reading of the game, goal-scoring ability, speed and skills were something the crowd had never witnessed before. Week-in, week-out, he remained consistent. The Kenyan Football Association and Kenyans in general, should be proud of how this man represented his country. A true gentleman of the game. But with all that said, the question remains; will the lanky striker ever grace Japan football lovers with his dazzling flair again? Truth be told, I doubt he will be back but man I hope he proves me wrong. It really would be good to see him in the J1league again.
