The sporting industry is one of the most exciting but yet complex environments to navigate. So many individuals start playing sports from a young age. Naturally, it's all out of fun, pure innocence, love and enjoyment, and in all honesty, that is the best way to begin any journey that's worth travelling. As young athletes begin to grow and mature, the level of passion accompanied with dedication and commitment begins to separate the average players from the exceptional ones. People have different reasons as to why they play sports. Some play as a way of staying healthy or as a hobby. Some play as a way of belonging to a team and for social reasons. Others play because they have dreams of becoming elite athletes and achieving greatness within their chosen sporting code. Their motivation is more intrinsic and pushes them to prepare themselves in ways that might not necessarily be considered as normal.
The harsh reality of pursuing a career as an elite athlete is the probability of making it to the professional leagues. The percentage of players that eventually make it to the top of their sport is around 1-2%. These kind of statistics can be disheartening and discouraging for a lot of up and coming athletes. But, It shouldn't. There is absolutely no shame in shooting for the stars and not making it as a professional athlete. This disappointing feeling of failure is what causes a lot of highly passionate people to quit something they love, in order to settle for a life of feeling shame and bitterness. The important question that those who quit should be asking themselves is "how can I remain as a part of the sporting ecosystem, even as a non-athlete?"
In the past, coaching or being a fitness trainer were the only ways one could remain within the sporting industry. However, as the constant evolution and growth within professional sports, so many other working opportunities are opening up within the sporting ecosystem. Executive positions within teams' front offices has become a possibility. While these are available, it's important that former athletes know that education becomes an important factor for teams to hire them in executive positions.
The other avenue that former players can venture into is by becoming a sports agent. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense as to why they should. Nobody knows the mind of an athlete as much as someone who used to be an athlete themselves. Former players are able to relate easier to athletes, and will make their well-being a priority ahead of the big commission.
It's important to note that there is a process to becoming a sports agent. It's not as simple as giving one's self the title. There's a procedure and accreditation that individuals must attain to be able to begin representing athletes/coaches and teams. Athlete Network has a created an online course "Becoming a Sports Agent & Building Your Agency Brand."
